matcha works in a smoothie, but a blender doesn't fix every problem. if you put too much powder into a thick mix and stop blending as soon as the fruit disappears, you can still get a dry, gritty pocket. i start with a small amount of matcha, enough liquid to keep the blender moving, and fruit that's already cut into pieces.
for one large smoothie, try one banana, about a cup of milk, and one to two teaspoons of matcha. a few spoonfuls of plain yogurt can make it thicker if you like that texture. frozen banana makes the drink colder and thicker; a fresh banana works too, but you may want a few ice cubes. different matcha powders taste different, so start at the lower end and add more only after tasting.
put the milk in the blender first. add the matcha, then the banana and any yogurt. blend until you can no longer see pieces of fruit or streaks of powder. if the blades spin without pulling everything down, stop the blender and add a splash more milk. don't push food toward moving blades with a spoon. use your blender's directions for the order of ingredients and how full to fill it.
taste before you add honey or another sweetener. a ripe banana may be enough. if the matcha is lost, use a little less fruit or milk next time, or add a small amount of matcha and blend again now. if it tastes bitter, adding more powder is unlikely to help. check the amount you used and whether the fruit was ripe. if the smoothie seems thin, use less milk on the next round or use frozen banana instead of adding a lot more ice.
if your blender is weak and the powder sticks to the sides, make a small matcha slurry first. mix the powder with a few tablespoons of milk in a separate cup until smooth, then pour that into the blender. this is the same idea as mixing matcha with a little water before making a latte. it isn't required with a strong blender, but it helps if you keep finding green spots on the wall of the jar.
i'd drink this right after blending. the fruit and liquid can separate as it sits, and ice keeps melting. give it a stir if you pause before drinking. for a thicker smoothie, use less liquid; for one you can drink through a straw, add milk a little at a time. there is no single correct consistency.
start with banana, milk, and matcha. you can add yogurt or other fruit once you know how the basic version tastes. that way the matcha doesn't disappear under six other ingredients.
Couplet has matcha if you want to try this.
