how do i make matcha without a bamboo whisk?

you do not need to delay matcha because a tiny bamboo whisk is not currently in your kitchen.

a jar works.

start by sifting about 1 teaspoon of matcha into a clean jar with a tight lid. add a small splash of warm water. not boiling. seal the jar and shake it hard for 15 to 20 seconds.

open it carefully. once the matcha looks smooth, add the rest of your water or milk.

that is the easiest version.

if you have a handheld milk frother, use a tall cup so your counter does not become green. add the matcha and a little warm water, then move the frother around until you do not see dry pockets. frothers can make plenty of foam. sometimes too much foam. this is not a character flaw.

a blender also works for a bigger batch or an iced latte. add the liquid and matcha, then blend briefly. do not put very hot liquid in a sealed blender unless its instructions say that is safe.

only have a spoon? make a paste first. press the matcha into a small amount of water until the lumps are gone, then slowly add more liquid. it will not get as foamy, but it will still be matcha.

the important part is not the exact tool. it is mixing the powder with a small amount of liquid before asking it to behave in a whole latte.

tl;dr: sift the matcha, add a little warm water, then shake it in a sealed jar for 15 to 20 seconds. a handheld frother, blender, or spoon-made paste can work too.

if your kitchen tools are on strike, we can make the matcha for you at Couplet.
