latte vs flat white vs cortado: every espresso drink on the menu, decoded

every drink on an espresso menu is the same two or three ingredients. the only thing that changes is the ratio.

once you know that, the menu stops being scary. here's every common espresso drink by what actually goes in the cup.

the baseline: the shot

all of these start with a shot of espresso (or two). if you're not sure what that is, start with espresso for dummies and come back.

espresso, straight

just the shot. 25-30ml, no milk, no water. the purest way to taste the coffee itself. if a cafe's straight espresso tastes good, everything else they make will be good.

americano

1 part espresso + 2-3 parts hot water. same strength as drip coffee, different flavor - you keep some of that espresso richness. iced americano is the same thing over ice.

macchiato

espresso "marked" with a spoonful of foam (macchiato means marked or stained in italian). basically a straight shot with the edge taken off. small, strong, quick. note: the giant caramel thing at chain stores is not this.

cortado

1 part espresso + 1 part steamed milk, little to no foam. the most balanced drink on the menu - half coffee, half milk, usually served in a small glass. if you find lattes too milky and straight shots too intense, this is your drink.

flat white

1 part espresso + 2-3 parts steamed milk with a thin, velvety layer of microfoam. stronger-tasting than a latte because there's less milk, smoother than a cortado because of the texture. the coffee still leads.

cappuccino

1 part espresso + 1 part steamed milk + 1 part foam, in roughly equal thirds. airy, textured, lighter in your mouth than a latte despite being a smaller drink. the foam is the point.

latte

the milk-heavy one. a shot of espresso with the most steamed milk of anything on this list, topped with a little foam. mellow, creamy, easy. this is why lattes taste "weaker" - same caffeine, way more milk.

mocha

a latte with chocolate in it. espresso + steamed milk + chocolate, sometimes whipped cream. it's a dessert and that's fine.

the cheat sheet

strongest to milkiest: straight espresso → macchiato → cortado → flat white → cappuccino → latte → mocha.

the caffeine barely changes across all of these (it's the same shot count). what changes is how much milk is standing between you and the coffee. order by how much you want to taste the espresso itself, not by how much energy you need.

and if you want the ritual without the jitters - our ceremonial matcha has about as much caffeine as a shot, plus l-theanine to smooth it out. the full breakdown is in matcha for dummies, and the latte recipe is in how to make a matcha latte at home.

which one are you ordering next time? or are you sticking with your usual?
